Sofa Dimensions & Sizes – Which Sofa Fits Your Living Room? | PolsterOase

The most common mistake when buying a sofa is choosing one that is too small. A sofa that looks large in a furniture store can get lost in your own living room. The easiest trick: tape out the planned dimensions on the floor with painter's tape and live with it for a day. It costs nothing — making the wrong decision does.

How much space does a sofa need in a room?

There should be at least 80–90 cm of space in front of the sofa — enough to walk past comfortably. Between the sofa and coffee table: 40–50 cm. Between the sofa and the wall behind it: 10–20 cm is enough; the sofa does not have to be against the wall. A sofa positioned slightly away from the center of the room often looks more spacious and inviting than one placed tightly against all the walls.

Which sofa size for which room?

Rooms up to 14 m²: 2-seater up to 180 cm wide. Anything larger will not fit visually or functionally without dominating the room.

Rooms from 14–18 m²: 3-seater from 200 cm wide or a compact corner sofa up to 240 cm. The room now has space for a statement piece.

Rooms from 18–25 m²: corner sofa from 240–300 cm or a medium-sized sofa set. The coffee table can also be larger now.

Rooms from 25 m²: large sofa set or U-shape. In open-plan layouts, the sofa can serve as a room divider — it does not need a wall behind it.

Corner sofa — left or right?

Stand in front of the sofa and look at it. Is the chaise longue (the longer section) on your left? Left-hand version. On your right? Right-hand version. That's all. If you're unsure: call us, describe the room — we'll tell you in 60 seconds which version is right.

Sofa dimensions you should know

Seat depth: 50–60 cm is standard. Over 70 cm is lounge territory — comfortable for lounging, but sitting upright becomes less comfortable. Seat height: 42–48 cm is ideal for most people. Too low (under 40 cm) makes getting up difficult; too high (over 50 cm) feels uncomfortable. Backrest height: 75–85 cm from the floor is standard. Over 90 cm provides more head support — good for tall people, but can look bulky.

OUR STORY

Over 20 years ago, it all began with a school internship at a furniture store. At the age of 12, I stood among sofas, fabrics, and upholstery for the first time — and was instantly captivated.

I never left the furniture industry. I worked in the warehouse, sold in sales, and learned in purchasing what really matters when it comes to quality. These years taught me more than any textbook ever could — about materials, about people, and about what makes a truly good furniture purchase.

All this experience, combined with genuine passion and the desire for a more honest, personal furniture shopping experience, eventually led to the creation of PolsterOase. A company that provides the kind of advice I would want myself — honest, expert, and with a real sense of what suits you and your home.

Yours, Martin Dziukiewicz
