Mirror

Mirror, mirror on the wall… Looking in the mirror in the morning and asking “How do I look?” is part of our daily routine. Although the mirror doesn’t answer like it does in fairy tales, it nevertheless shows us the unvarnished answer to this question in the form of our reflection.

Mirrors as practical and decorative home accessories

A mirror is part of the basic furnishings of many homes. It helps with getting dressed and daily grooming, but can also be used as a decorative element.

With different shapes, sizes, frames, and colors, you will find the right model for almost every room. Large floor mirrors are suitable for bedrooms and dressing areas. Compact wall mirrors fit in hallways, bathrooms, and smaller living spaces.

Discover our mirrors at PolsterOase and find a model that suits your interior style.

Make rooms with mirrors appear brighter and larger

Mirrors can make a room appear visually larger because they reflect existing surfaces and light sources. This effect is particularly noticeable with large models and in smaller rooms.

The position should be chosen deliberately. A mirror opposite or to the side of a window can reflect daylight into the room. Make sure that no distracting glare is created and that direct sunlight is not permanently directed at sensitive furniture or textiles.

Also in combination with wall lamps or table lamps, a mirror can make the room appear brighter. The lamp should be positioned so that its light is reflected pleasantly and does not shine directly into the eyes.

Before you mount a large mirror, you can mark its area on the wall with paper or adhesive tape. This makes it easier to assess the later effect.

What types of mirrors are there?

Wall mirrors do not require floor space and are therefore also suitable for small rooms. Depending on the size, they can be mounted above a dresser, sideboard, or sink.

Floor mirrors can be positioned flexibly in the room. Large models allow a view of the entire outfit. However, they require sufficient floor space and must stand securely against tipping.

Full-length mirrors are tall enough to show the entire body. They are particularly suitable for bedrooms, dressing areas, and hallways.

Table mirrors and cosmetic mirrors are compact and can be used on a shelf, dresser, or dressing table. Some models have a magnifying side or integrated lighting.

Mirrors with shelves combine the mirror surface with additional space for small items. In the hallway, keys or decorations can be placed there. In the bathroom, they are suitable for personal care products, provided the model is designed for damp rooms.

Mirrors in the bathroom

A bathroom mirror should fit the width of the sink and the available space. For daily grooming, even lighting is important.

Lights mounted on either side of the mirror can reduce harsh shadows on the face. With lighting above the mirror, the light should be distributed broadly and as glare-free as possible.

Not every mirror and not every light is suitable for the bathroom. Moisture can damage frames, coatings, and electrical components. Therefore, pay attention to the manufacturer's specifications for use in damp rooms.

With illuminated mirrors, the prescribed IP protection rating and the requirements of the respective installation area must be met. The electrical connection should be carried out by a qualified electrician.

Mirrors in the bedroom

In the bedroom, a large mirror is suitable for selecting and checking the outfit. It can be attached to the wall, leaned against a suitable place, or placed as a floor model.

For leaning mirrors, additional protection against tipping is important. This applies especially in households with children or pets.

A mirror opposite the bed is a matter of personal taste. Before installation, check which areas are reflected and whether light sources create distracting reflections at night.

Mirrors in the hallway

In the hallway, a mirror allows for a final look before leaving the apartment. At the same time, it can make a narrow or windowless entrance area appear more open.

A full-length mirror is practical if there is enough free wall space. In small hallways, a narrow model without a bulky frame is suitable.

Above a console or dresser, a wall mirror can be combined with a small light and selected accessories. Make sure that it does not obstruct doors, cabinets, or walkways.

Mirrors in the living room and dining room

In the living room, a mirror is mainly used as a decorative design element. Above a sideboard, it can structure a bare wall and reflect selected furniture or light sources.

A large mirror should not be hung randomly opposite a busy area. The reflection of a window, a plant, a lamp, or a deliberately designed living area looks particularly appealing.

In the dining room, a mirror can visually expand the table area. Choose a position that does not blind seated people with direct light reflections.

Mirror shapes and their effect

Rectangular mirrors appear clear and versatile. Standing vertically, they are suitable as full-length mirrors. Landscape-oriented models fit above wide dressers and sideboards.

Round mirrors loosen up straight-lined interiors. They look particularly harmonious above a narrow console, sink, or dresser.

Oval mirrors combine the soft effect of a round model with a longer shape. They fit well with classic and elegant interiors.

Organically shaped mirrors have irregular contours. They look modern and are suitable as a decorative eye-catcher on a bare wall.

Arch-shaped mirrors pick up the shape of a window or passageway. Large models can make a room appear visually higher.

Several small mirrors can design a wall together. However, the arrangement should remain calm and have enough distance between the individual elements.

Finding the right frame material

Wooden frames bring warmth and naturalness to the room. Light woods fit particularly well with Scandinavian interiors. Dark wood looks more classic and creates a stronger contrast.

Metal frames have a clear and modern aura. Black frames fit industrial and minimalist interior styles. Gold-colored or brass-colored models look more elegant.

Rattan and other woven materials support a natural or boho-style room.

Plastic allows for lightweight frames in many colors and shapes. What matters is clean workmanship and secure fastening.

Frameless mirrors appear particularly minimalist. They are suitable for modern rooms and smaller surfaces, as no conspicuous frame limits the mirror surface.

Selecting mirrors to match the interior style

For modern interiors, simple models with a thin metal frame or without a visible frame are suitable.

In Scandinavian style, light wooden frames, soft shapes, and a restrained design fit.

The boho style is complemented by rattan, natural tones, and organic shapes.

For the industrial style, black metal frames and large rectangular mirror surfaces are suitable.

Classic and elegant rooms benefit from gold-colored frames, oval shapes, and subtle decorations.

In vintage style, frames may be designed more conspicuously. Antique-looking surfaces and decorative details set a conscious accent.

You can find further decorative additions in our wall decoration category.

The right mirror size

The size should fit the piece of furniture, the wall surface, and the intended use. Above a sideboard, a mirror looks harmonious if it is not significantly wider than the piece of furniture.

To check the entire outfit, you need a sufficiently tall mirror and enough distance in front of it. Not only the mirror height, but also the mounting height and viewing distance influence which area is visible.

In small rooms, a large model can be more effective than several small mirrors. It creates a calm surface and reflects a larger room area.

Measure the wall and adjacent furniture before purchasing. Take into account power outlets, light switches, doors, and existing lights.

Mounting mirrors securely

The fastening must be coordinated with the weight, size, and wall material. For concrete, masonry, drywall, and other wall types, different screws and wall plugs are required.

Do not rely on unsuitable adhesive strips for heavy mirrors. Use only fastening systems that are expressly approved for the mirror weight, wall surface, and place of use.

Mirror tiles and light models can be glued depending on the manufacturer. Check beforehand whether the substrate is level, load-bearing, clean, and suitable for the adhesive used. Unsuitable adhesive can damage the back of the mirror.

Large, heavy, or valuable mirrors should be professionally mounted. Floor mirrors and leaning models require protection against tipping.

Cleaning mirrors correctly

First, remove loose dust with a clean, soft cloth. Then you can clean the mirror surface with a slightly damp microfiber cloth.

For heavier soiling, a sparing use of mild glass cleaner is suitable, provided the manufacturer's specifications allow this. Spray the cleaner onto the cloth and not directly onto the mirror.

This prevents liquid from running behind the frame or along the mirror edges. Moisture at the edges can damage coatings and the back.

Then polish the surface with a dry, lint-free cloth. Abrasive sponges and aggressive cleaning agents are unsuitable.

Frames made of wood, metal, rattan, or plastic require care tailored to the respective material.
