Wall lamps require little space but can still make a strong impression. Many models use the wall as a reflective surface. Depending on their design, the light shines upwards, downwards, sideways, or in multiple directions.
This creates narrow beams of light, soft transitions, or striking patterns. Models that shine light upwards and downwards add structure to empty wall spaces and can highlight pictures, mirrors, or furniture. To keep the effect visible, there should be enough empty space around the lamp.

Wall lamps for a balanced lighting concept
Wall lamps complement general room lighting, brighten dark areas, and add decorative accents. Indirect models cast their light against a wall or ceiling, creating a calm atmosphere. Adjustable spotlights can be aimed at pictures, furniture, or reading areas. Reading lamps with an adjustable arm provide direct light next to a sofa or bed.
The lighting looks particularly harmonious when combined with floor lamps, table lamps, and pendant lights.
Wall lamps in small rooms
Wall lamps require neither floor space nor space on a piece of furniture. This makes them ideal for narrow hallways, small bedrooms, and compact living areas. Slim models protrude only slightly into the room, reducing the risk of obstructing walkways.
Indirect light can make a small room appear more open. Light-colored walls reflect more light than dark surfaces. A dimming function allows for bright orientation light and subdued evening lighting.
Popular materials
Wood has a warm, natural look and suits Scandinavian or rustic interiors. Metal has a clean appearance and is suitable for modern and industrial spaces. Glass looks light and timeless. Opal glass distributes light more softly than clear glass.
Plastic allows for compact shapes and a low weight. Ceramic and porcelain suit classic or nostalgic interior styles. Brass brings a warm metallic tone to the room and harmonizes particularly well with glass, dark wood, and muted colors.
Wall lamps for different interior styles
Clean shapes in metal or glass suit modern interiors. Black metal and visible details support an industrial style. Light colors and wood have a Scandinavian feel. Natural materials and warm tones suit a boho style. Brass, gold tones, and glass create an elegant effect. Spherical shapes and colored glass are suitable for a retro look.

Wall lamps in the living room and bedroom
In the living room, wall lamps can brighten dark corners, emphasize pictures, or provide light next to the sofa. An adjustable lamp next to an armchair is suitable as a reading light and requires no surface to stand on.
Above a sideboard, a wall lamp can highlight decorative objects. The lamp, piece of furniture, and decoration should be visually aligned.
In the bedroom, wall lamps are a space-saving alternative to a bedside lamp. Warm white, dimmable light supports a calm atmosphere. Two lamps next to the bed should be mounted at the same height and not glare while lying down.
Wall lamps in the hallway and dining room
In the hallway, wall lamps provide orientation. Several evenly spaced models can visually divide a long room. In narrow passageways, lamps with a small profile are practical.
In the dining room, wall lamps complement the light above the table. They are particularly effective on an empty wall or above a sideboard. For direct lighting on the table, a pendant light is usually the more targeted solution.
Wall lamps in the bathroom and outdoor areas
In the bathroom, wall lamps can illuminate the mirror area. Models mounted on the side reduce harsh shadows on the face. Not every lamp is suitable for damp rooms. The manufacturer's approval and an IP protection rating suitable for the installation area are crucial.
In outdoor areas, only lamps expressly designed for this purpose may be used. Material alone is not sufficient as a criterion. Weather resistance, protection rating, and professional installation are important.
The correct mounting height
There is no fixed height for all wall lamps. The position depends on the use, room height, light distribution, and lamp shape. Decorative models are often mounted approximately at eye level. It is important that the light source does not glare from common viewing directions.
Next to the bed, the height depends on the mattress and reading position. In the hallway, the lamp must not protrude into the walkway. Above a sideboard, there must be sufficient clearance from furniture and decoration.
Work on permanently connected wiring should be carried out by a qualified electrician.
Cleaning wall lamps properly
Metal is cleaned with a dry or slightly damp microfiber cloth. Glass can be cleaned with a suitable glass cleaner. Wood should mainly be dusted dry. Plastic is cared for with a soft cloth and mild cleaner. For brass, only products suitable for the respective surface may be used.
Before cleaning, switch off the power supply and let the lamp cool down. Moisture must not enter the connections or other electrical components.
